Each capsule contains 100mg of pentosan polysulfate sodium.

Elmiron is an antiseptic and works by protecting the bladder wall, Elmiron is excreted into the urine and once the urine reaches the bladder it sticks to the exposed bladder walls and begins to replace the broken GAG defenses. 
Elmiron has been shows to reduce:

• bladder pain
• the constant urge to pass urine
• the number of times you visit the toilet
• the need to get up in the night to visit the toilet

It is recommended to take with water and at least 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal.
Take Elmiron as directed by your healthcare practitioner.

DO NOT TAKE if you are allergic to pentosan polysulfate sodium or any other ingredients in this medicine (mircrocrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, gelatin, titanium dioxode (E171)). actively bleeding (other than menstrual bleeding)

SPEAK WITH YOU HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONER BEFORE USING IF:

you are taking anticoagulant therapy, such as warfarin sodium, heparin, high does of aspirin (above 300mg) or any other anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen
could be pregnant or are breast-feeding, Elmiron is not recommended during pregnancy or breast-feeding
you are having surgery, Elmiron is a weak anticoagulant (blood thinner) which may increase bleeding.

Elmiron capsules are not halal or kosher and contain gelatin so may not be suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Elmiron does not contain any of the major allergens, including milk, gluten and soya.

Elmiron is generally well tolerated but, as will all medicines, it may still cause some side effects. Most of these are minor but if something is bothering you it is important to tell your healthcare practitioner.
The most common side effects are: flu type feelings, headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, upset stomach, blood in the stool, effect of hair growth, joint swelling, back pain, urinary frequency.
In rare cases eye problems have been reported with the use of Elmiron. It is important to tell your healthcare practitioner immediately if you experience visual changes such as reading difficulties and slower adjustment to low or reduced light. 
If you experience some hair loss do not panic. Elmiron does not cause long-term hair loss but it increases the time your hair follicles go into rest phase before they re-grow.
